MAP Social is a weekly group for 18-25s, they meet at the Norwich drop in.  It’s a small group that meets each fortnight. A safe, friendly space to be together and choose things to do. We may go to the cinema or do some cooking or we may do a longer project…

FOR instance: This following project brought together a group of young people to explore their perceptions of Norwich through the camera lens.  They attended workshops, which looked at creating visual interpretations of the photos taken each week – using a set theme to inspire. We also looked at ways to use camera settings and different photographic genres.  The participants were able to choose how they understood the theme and take pictures to represent/articulate what they thought and felt.  All of the photographs were taken on location within the group or within their own time with workshop sheets to guide.

Why photography?
Photography is a highly flexible tool that crosses cultural and linguistic barriers, and can be adapted to all abilities. It can act as an alternative visual language and playing with both images and words together allows people to find new forms of expression. It encourages sharing and generates connection & discussion.

Photography can offer opportunities to explore how you see yourself, how others see you and how you interpret your own sense of place.

These images together with their text are a visual interpretation of Norwich and everything it means to them and will soon be exhibited in the Norwich Drop in as well as Castle Mall. With huge thanks to the participants who took part.
