At MAP we’re committed to equality and justice for trans people.
We understand that the Supreme Court’s recent judgement on the definition of “woman” and “man” within “sex” as a protected characteristic in the Equalities Act, 2010 is causing distress and confusion to those within and outside the trans community. We’ve had enquires for help not just from young people but from schools and other organisations. So what can and can’t we do?
Unfortunately we don’t have the expertise or jurisdiction to offer legal advice to any organisation on the implications of the judgement and no-one knows how it will play out in practice. However, we absolutely do offer support to any young person aged 11-25 who is experiencing distress as a result of the judgement.
As well as the advice, counselling and youth work services that are available to all young people, we have Evolve peer support groups meeting in Norwich and Great Yarmouth, specifically for those who are trans, non-binary, intersex and/or questioning their gender.
If you are a young person and you need some support or advice please get in touch. We are here for you. You can call us on 0800 0744454, drop-in, or email us at [email protected]. Find your nearest MAP drop-in centre here.
It is worth noting that Judge Hodge in his statement on the decision reiterated that the Equalities Act "gives transgender people protection, not only against discrimination through the protected characteristic of gender reassignment, but also against direct discrimination, indirect discrimination and harassment in substance in their acquired gender".
