Living with your parents or guardian? How are things at home? Are you finding that tempers are flaring, and tensions are rising? It’s not always easy living under one roof...

Hands

If you are struggling with family relationships, mediation can help. Family mediation is a process which enables you to explore your issues together and try to resolve them. It provides a safe and neutral space which can help you to maintain better family relationships.

If things are not going well between you and your parents or guardian, but you want them to improve, then family mediation may be really helpful.

It may help you to come to a mutual agreement in settling your differences – or it may just give you a chance to clear the air. Sometimes, clearing the air is enough to smooth things out. Sometimes it can be surprisingly effective to take some time out to constructively talk through things that have been upsetting you. A family mediation worker will be there as a third party – not to take sides but to makes sure that everyone gets a chance to speak and be heard.

MAP Family Mediation is a free, voluntary process.

Mediation only takes place if both parties want to do it. It takes place in an informal, non-judgmental atmosphere. We set ground rules to make sure that things stay as calm as possible, and we can help you to come up with a written agreement if that’s helpful, to refer to afterwards.

You’d be surprised how often two people come to me who are barely on speaking terms, who feel that they have said such horrible things to each other...

Many of the families we see worry that they have behaved so badly, or gotten into a pattern where they are arguing about every little thing, to the extent that there is little hope of fixing things – and yet, after just an hour of sitting calmly talking it through and hearing each other’s point of view, things start to heal.

Some of our clients have been on verge of being kicked out of home - and some were already kicked out when they attended mediation.

Despite these challenges, many young people who seek mediation have since managed to work things out and go back home. Some of our clients have sought mediation because they were having an utterly miserable time in their household; just because they couldn’t agree a rota for washing up, or agree on how late they should stay out at weekends. Others were having such a stressful time at school or college that it affected how they were relating to their family.

Again, with a little bit of work, and a commitment to improving things, relationships often improve.

When life puts unexpected extra strain on people – their finances, their living situations or their family relationships – things that might usually be tolerable can become harder to put up with – and relationships that were already a bit strained may reach breaking point. Sound familiar? Then please get in touch. MAP are here to help you.
